Tsavo National Park

Tsavo National Park

The Land of Lava, Springs, and Man-Eaters

As Kenya’s largest protected area, Tsavo is a vast, rugged wilderness that offers a true “off-the-beaten-path” safari experience. It is famous for its “Red Elephants”—named for the red volcanic dust they spray on their hides—and the legendary “Man-Eaters of Tsavo” lions.

Tsavo East: The Theater of the Wild

  • Yatta Plateau: The world’s longest lava flow, stretching over 290km, creating a stunning backdrop for photography.

  • Lugard Falls: A series of white-water rapids on the Galana River where you can watch giant crocodiles basking on the rocks.

  • Aruba Dam: A massive reservoir that attracts thousands of animals, making it a prime spot for game viewing.

Tsavo West: The Land of Magic

  • Mzima Springs: A crystal-clear oasis where millions of gallons of water gush from underground, home to hippos and crocodiles that can be viewed from an underwater observatory.

  • Shetani Lava Flows: A dramatic landscape of black folded lava, offering a stark and beautiful contrast to the surrounding bush.

  • Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary: A dedicated stronghold for the endangered black rhino, nestled at the foot of the scenic Ngulia Hills.
