The Arid North & The Samburu Special Five
Located in the rugged, semi-desert region of Northern Kenya, Samburu National Reserve offers a dramatic landscape of doum palms, acacia forests, and the life-giving Ewaso Nyiro River. It is a land of stark beauty, home to the Samburu people and a unique collection of wildlife adapted to the arid northern climate.
The “Samburu Special Five”:
Unlike other parks, Samburu is famous for five rare species found north of the equator:
Reticulated Giraffe: Known for its striking, brick-red polygonal pattern.
Grevy’s Zebra: The world’s largest zebra, featuring thin stripes and large round ears.
Somali Ostrich: Distinguished by its unique blue neck and legs.
Beisa Oryx: A desert-adapted antelope with long, straight horns.
Gerenuk: The “Giraffe-necked” gazelle that stands on its hind legs to reach high branches.
Highlights
Ewaso Nyiro River: The park’s lifeline, where elephants, Nile crocodiles, and leopards gather to drink.
Cultural Immersion: Spend time with the Samburu people, whose vibrant traditional attire and nomadic lifestyle are deeply intertwined with this wilderness.
Birdwatcher’s Paradise: Over 450 species of birds, including the Vulturine Guineafowl and various birds of prey.
