The Royal Court of the African Elephant
Nestled at the foot of the majestic Mount Kilimanjaro, Amboseli National Park is world-renowned for providing the most iconic view in Africa: massive herds of elephants marching across open plains with the snow-capped peak of the world’s tallest free-standing mountain as a backdrop. Known as the “Land of Giants,” it is one of the best places on Earth to get up close to free-ranging elephants, including the famous “big tuskers.”
Highlights
Kilimanjaro Views: On clear mornings and late afternoons, the park offers unrivaled photographic opportunities of Africa’s highest peak.
Elephant Research Sanctuary: Home to some of the most studied elephants in the world, the park’s lush swamps are a magnet for hundreds of elephants and hippos.
Observation Hill: A pyramid-shaped hill that offers a panoramic aerial view of the entire park, its marshes, and the dusty Pleistocene lake bed from which the park gets its name (Empusel — “Salty Dust”).
Diverse Habitats: Despite its semi-arid appearance, the park features a unique contrast of dry lake beds, sulfur springs, and permanent swamps fed by Kilimanjaro’s melting snow.
